History
The precise date when Stourbridge Golf Club was formed is not clear due to the loss of many of the earliest records. The first surviving minutes of a meeting held at the club are those of the Committee meeting held on 22nd September 1894 which referred to the fact that the club had been running for around two years pointing to 1892 as the formation year.
At that time it was a nine hole course built on the old Pedmore Racecourse. The course was subsequently extended to 18 holes over 93 acres and at one time was included in the 'Guinness Book of Records' as being the course with 'the longest yardage over the smallest acreage'.
In it's history, the club boasts of a wealth of talented golfers, past & present including Dr. W Tweddell, British Amateur Champion and British Walker Cup Captain along with being Captain of the R & A; the late Eric Fiddian who sadly passed away at Christmas time 2005 and who was a former English Amateur Champion and Walker Cup member and who played alongside the legendary Bobby Jones in the British Open and not forgetting Denis Hayes, a former Chairman of the R & A Committee.
Indeed, many famous golfers have played at Stourbridge. Henry Cotton played on several occasions including an exhibition match in 1963 when he partnered Charlie Ward, the Little Aston Professional against our resident professional, Bill Firkins Senior who partnered Peter Butler, a Ryder Cup member. The latter pair won 9 & 7 with Butler returning a 64, Firkins a 71, Ward a 74 and Cotton a 76.
Stourbridge Golf Club is steeped in history and whilst our total yardage is only 6,231 yards, it is a very good test of golf even for the professional golfer - stray off the fairways at your peril !!!
